There are many possible health Risks associated with tattooing and
body piercing. These risks stem from (but are not limited to)
negative reactions caused by;
·
Products used,
·
The process by which products are applied/used,
·
The Environment in which they are applied/used,
·
Aftercare followed by the end client.
As it is not possible to know every risk associated with the
products used or the body art procedures performed, it is therefore
urged that prior to any tattooing or body piercing all reasonable
steps are taken to ensure;
1.
No tattooing or
body piercing is performed on any persons
under 18 years of age
2.
A Full disclosure of any known risks (and the possibility of unknown
risks) for the procedure (including the products and equipment used
for tattooing or
piercing) is given in writing which is easily
understandable and is verbally fully explained to the client.
3.
Written screen testing is employed to help expose clients at risk of
reaction/complications such as (including but not limited to) those
with any prohibitive medical conditions (e.g.: illness, blood
pressure conditions, allergy, pregnancy etc), having recently
undergone or due to undergo any medical procedures and those using
any form of medication or recreational drugs.
We recommend the use of a
written client screening test developed by a competent Medical
doctor and dermatologist
4.
Patch testing of each brand of Tattoo Ink and individual colour
takes place before any tattooing.
5.
In the event of any uncertainty about the suitability of any products, materials or
equipment used the advice of a competent Medical Doctor must first
be sought.
Adequate record keeping is vital part of responsible behaviour.
Client Records must be detailed and should incorporate screening
forms, risk disclosures, indemnity as well as detailed information
on the products used (e.g: Tattoo
Inks used – Brand, colour, batch, lot number)
Ensure that you keep an updated and easily accessible file with
product instructions and Material Safety Data Sheets on hand at all
times.
In Keeping with your occupational Health Requirements it is vital
that your first aid training and first aid kit meets the
requirements to handle any emergencies relating to the procedures
and products you use in your business.
